SEATTLE (AP) — A woman who shot a man during protests of a right-wing speaker at the University of Washington says she fired to stop her husband from getting stabbed.
Elizabeth Hokoana was the last witness called Wednesday in the five-week trial on assault charges against her and her husband, Marc Hokoana.
Elizabeth Hokoana says Joshua Dukes was armed with a knife and she fired after he grabbed her husband in January 2017.
No other witness testified to seeing a knife. Authorities did not find a blade.
She says the knife had a dark coating, making it difficult to see.
Prosecutors say the Hokoanas had appeared at the event looking for trouble. Marc Hokoana carried pepper spray and a knife while she had a 9 mm handgun.
