PORT ANGELES – We reported earlier this month that, after 22 years, the first stages of an eventual clean-up and restoration project were underway at the old Rayonier Mill site at the east end of Port Angeles Harbor.

The Department of Ecology has just announced a public comment period starting today through October 28 to provide an opportunity for you to comment on three environmental reports before the cleanup begins. You can submit comments online during the comment period.

The DOE is also hosting an Open House in Port Angeles on September 25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Olympic Medical Center in Linkletter Hall to answer questions about the reports and the Rayonier Mill cleanup.

In order to brief yourself ahead of that meeting, we’ve provided the links you’ll need within this story on our website at myclallamcounty.com

The three reports for your review and comment include Volume 1, which describes what the contaminants are and where they are in soil and groundwater, Volume 2 describes what and where they are in underwater sediments, and Volume 3 is about the different options for cleanup.

The information is also available at the Port Angeles Public Library.

See volumes 1,2 and 3 at the Rayonier Mill webpage.

A Fact Sheet briefly summarizes information from the reports and contains information about the public comment period and open house.
