PAHS incorporating climate change education for all students

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School staff will teach climate change throughout the curriculum this year.

In a welcome-back-to-school memo to families, high school officials say educating for climate change will be the theme school-wide this year and all disciplines will find ways to incorporate the topic into instruction.

District officials say the move is in response to a National Public Radio survey that showed 80% of responding parents nationwide supported teaching of climate change in schools. The state legislature also decreed “instruction about conservation, natural resources, and the environment shall be provided..through science, the social studies, the humanities, and other appropriate areas with an emphasis on solving the problems of human adaptation to the environment”.

PAHS officials say, in addition to classroom work and lesson plans, there also will be school-wide activities designed to empower students to deal with a changing climate.
