Homeless camp attack leads to arrest, sex charges

PORT ANGELES – Randy Gantt, a 41-year-old transient, was charged with a series of crimes including attempted rape, burglary with sexual motivation, and harassment with threats to kill Wednesday in Clallam County Superior Court and remains in the Clallam County Jail on $100k bail.

The case began when a witness approached Re-Discovery Social Worker Amy Miller, and asked about the status of the investigation but, according to law enforcement, no complaint had ever been filed.

Officers investigated the incident by talking to witnesses that had intervened in the alleged attack in an effort to protect the victim. They eventually found the victim and developed probable cause to believe that Gantt unlawfully entered the woman’s tent, demanded sex, exposed himself and threatened to kill her using gasoline to burn her and her camp.

The victim reportedly fought him off. Gantt was later located in a shelter and arrested and booked into the jail.

Gantt is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
