Weekend weather leads to rescues on the PCT

SNOHOMISH, Wash. – The snowy weekend in the mountains led to search and rescue crews rescuing two hikers along the Pacific Crest Trail.

The first hiker got into trouble Saturday when he fell into water near the Kennedy Creek crossing during heavy snow and began to suffer from severe cold. He activated his distress signal and was found a short time later by a Snohomish County helicopter rescue crew. The 41-year-old hiker was airlifted to an Everett hospital for treatment.

On Sunday, as temperatures dipped into the 20s, a 76-year-old man hiking the trail sent a distress signal after he fell and hit his head. Search crews eventually found the man’s belongings along the trail, but not the man himself.

An extensive search with the help of another nearby hiker eventually found the man near the North Fork of the Sauk River.

He was flown back to the Snohomish base where an ambulance took him to a local hospital.
