Former news anchor elected mayor of Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Former television news anchor Nadine Woodward is claiming victory in the race for Spokane mayor.

In her first run for public office, Woodward has defeated city council President Ben Stuckart in the race to run the state’s second-largest city.

Despite thousands of ballots left to count, Stuckart conceded after the first batch of results were released Tuesday evening.

Woodward was a longtime anchorwoman at two Spokane television stations before she sought to succeed Mayor David Condon, who is barred from seeking a third term.

The race was contentious and focused on public safety and the city’s homeless problem.
