RICHLAND, Wash. — A man who allegedly broke into the Richland home of an 11-year-old girl in the dead of night and tried to kidnap her at knifepoint has been arrested.
KOMO News reports the girl managed to grab the knife and successfully defend herself.
Police say it was late Saturday night when the man entered the girl’s home through an unsecured garage door. The girl awoke to find a stranger standing over her holding a knife to her throat. The girl managed to fight the intruder off and cut him with his own knife.
The man ran off through the front door, leaving his shoes and droplets of blood behind during the escape. The girl was not hurt.
Investigators were able to determine a suspect from a DNA sample of the blood left behind, and also placed cell phone records of the suspect at the scene during the time of the invasion, police said.
Police arrested the suspect during a traffic stop Wednesday night.
During an interview with detectives after his arrest, the suspect admitted to police that he drank heavily Saturday night and could not remember anything that happened that evening.
The suspect has been booked into the Benton County Jail for investigation of Assault, Kidnapping and Burglary.
