The Port of Seattle Commission has voted to ban the use of facial-recognition technology at SeaTac International Airport.
The Seattle Times reports the unanimous vote on Tuesday made Sea-Tac airport the first in the country to resist the use of a federal biometric identification program. The commission suspended the introduction of the new technologies until it adopts tangible, enforceable policies to govern its use.
The moratorium applies only to areas the port controls. The suspension doesn’t apply to biometric technologies used solely by Port staff for things like access to secure areas.
