PORT ANGELES – The Director of the North Olympic Library System, Margaret Jakubcin, has announced that she will retire next summer, and the Board of Trustees will soon launch a nationwide search to find a suitable replacement.
Jakubcin joined the NOLS staff as Assistant Director in 2007 and was promoted to Director in 2014. In those years, our libraries have come a long way in terms of the services they provide as well as the role they play in our community, and Jakubcin has overseen many of those changes.
What were once just places to go check out a book or read a newspaper have become community meeting places for reading events, training classes, speakers and music recitals.
Jakubcin has also been with NOLS to see the advent of e-books and audio books, expanded digital services, the modernization of the buildings themselves, and the recent elimination of overdue fees.
Jakubcin also led the effort to design and fund a new library in Sequim, a four year project, but voters narrowly rejected the capital bond in 2018.
Board of Trustees Chair Jennifer Pelikan says after the holidays they will finalize a process for conducting their search for a new Director, and the public will have a chance to meet finalists when they are selected.
