Pierce County public housing official admits to stealing $7M

The Washington State Auditor’s Office says the former finance director of a public housing authority stole nearly $7 million from the agency. It’s believed to be the largest theft ever from a public agency in Washington.

The investigation began in July after a routine audit found unauthorized transfers of several hundred thousand dollars at the Pierce County Housing Authority. The report says it appeared the finance director, Cova Campbell, used the money to buy property in Oklahoma.

Campbell was fired in August. In court documents and interviews with investigators she has acknowledged stealing the money.
