PORT ANGELES – The annual community tuna drive is now in its 26th year, and local businesses are ready to receive your donations through April 13th.

Tim Crowley is this year’s Tuna Drive Chairman. He spoke with us about this year’s goals to help the Port Angeles Food Bank. He says it’s more than just tuna that helps in this effort.

“The goal this year is to raise the equivalent of twenty six thousand cans of tuna fish which means it isn’t always just cans of tuna fish, but people will give monetary donations and we use that towards tuna and other protein sources. We don’t want to just be another food drive. The emphasis is on protein and the types of proteins we use are any kind of canned fish or meat, peanut butter. A lot of the high protein things that we use are perishable, so by giving monetary donations the food bank can purchase those items items and also accomplish its goal.”

If this year’s goals are met, the Tuna Drive will provide a protein source for nearly 2,000 clients and 550 weekly grade school backpack lunches.

Local merchants participating in the drive include the eastside Safeway, Mt. Pleasant IGS, Saar’s Super Saver Foods and the Port Angeles Food Bank.

Cash donations can be made by texting “Tuna Drive” to 44321.
