SEATTLE – The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, an independent global health research center at the University of Washington, has published their projections for the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths we will see nationwide and state-by-state, and the numbers are sobering.

Using data from World Health Organization and local and national governments worldwide, they asked themselves: Assuming social distancing measures are maintained, what are the forecasted gaps in available health care resources and what will be the number of deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic for each state in the United States over the next 4 months?
Their data puts the peak of the pandemic in mid-April, or 2-3 weeks from now. There is good news and bad news for Washington state in terms of our hospital readiness. They predict we’ll need about 3,000 hospital beds for COVID patients at the peak, and there are currently about 4,000 available. The bad news is, they’re predicting an Intensive Care Unit shortage of about 100 beds.

Statewide, their data predicts over 1,400 deaths by early August. Again, they think the outbreak will peak in mid-April with about 27 deaths per day in Washington.

The report estimates that there will be a total of over 81,000 deaths from COVID-19 over the next 4 months in the US.
