PORT ANGELES — Another local casualty of the coronavirus outbreak: No marathon in Port Angeles this year.
The North Olympic Discovery Marathon organizers decided to scrap the actual race that was set for June 7 due to the virus and shut down response.
Race director Victoria Jones said in a Facebook announcement over the weekend, that they’ll do a virtual marathon, where registrants can run the race on their own course and still receive credit through the marathon.
Jones says if the government shut down is lifted in time, they will mark out the local course so local runners can still do their virtual run on the actual course.
Cancelling the marathon is a financial blow to the community. Each year, organizers estimate it brings in about two million dollars to the Port Angeles area for the weekend.
