With two council seats on the line, virtual Sequim meeting is set to go

SEQUIM – Previous technical issues have been resolved and the Sequim City Council will go ahead with next Monday’s Council meeting as scheduled.

The meeting, to be held “virtually” because of the Governor’s stay-at-home order, is an important one because the Council will interview 4 candidates to fill 2 council seats.

Council member Jennifer States resigned her post in February to relocate to Seattle for business reasons. Deputy Mayor Ted Miller passed away unexpectedly on April 10.

The candidates were originally scheduled to be interviewed at the April 13 meeting, but it was cancelled because the technology license, necessary to allow citizens to join the meeting over the phone, was held up because of overwhelming demand.

Mayor William Armacost says that issue has since been worked out. We asked him if, in the meantime, any new candidates had applied for the positions.

“When we were unable to successfully do our first meeting we extended the enrollment period, if you would, for an additional two weeks, and we had zero additional interest. So that being said, we feel at this point if we have the opportunity to find two qualified candidates, we’re going to be grateful to fill those shoes and also elect a Deputy Mayor at that point.”

The 4 candidates, in alphabetical order, are Sarah Kincaid, Mike Pence, Lowell Rathbun and Robert Sheckler.

(Learn more about the candidates here).

Monday’s council meeting will begin at 6:00pm. The public can listen to the meeting live through the City website by clicking here.

Those without internet access can listen via telephone, but that phone number had not yet been announced at the time of this writing. We’re told it will be published on the City’s website at sequimwa.gov.

There currently is no public comment scheduled for virtual meetings. Members of the public are encouraged to submit their comments in writing to City Clerk Sara McMillon by email at smcmillon@sequimwa.gov or traditional mail at City of Sequim, 152 West Cedar Street, Sequim, WA 98382, Attention City Clerk.
