PORT ANGELES – Fall enrollment for Seaview Academy, Port Angeles School District’s 100% online education program, is now open.
Any district student, grades 3 through 12, is eligible to enroll in the online program, which utilizes Port Angeles teachers who are Washington State certified.
While it’s not lost on us that currently every student is an online student, and not by choice, Seaview Academy is designed to benefit students who, for a variety of reasons, may not thrive in traditional school and chose the format long before coronavirus sent everyone home for the rest of the school year.
Online School Director Cindy Crumb says the district decided to expand their online program in this way when they realized how many local students were already enrolled in similar programs being offered in other school districts.
“We have about a hundred and thirty families that have chosen to go online with another district. And so we know that there’s a need out there in this community who work from home. So we felt like, you know, we were doing a disservice to our families if we didn’t have this offering, because it is a really nice way for kids to graduate, get their diploma and have more flexibility.”
Crumb says several of those students who registered for online school outside of the district have now signed up for Seaview Academy.
Seaview students participate in the same state assessments and are required to meet all Washington State requirements prior to graduating and receiving a diploma.
Crumb says there are many reasons that the online option may be the best option for a student.
“Maybe there’s a young mom who can’t find childcare and would still like to stay in school. Maybe there’s somebody who’s out on their own and needs to work part-time. Online would help them still stay in school. There’s a lot of different reasons that kids choose to do online. And sometimes it’s just the circumstances that life has dealt them, and sometimes being in school from 7:30 to 2:30 just isn’t possible. So it’s just a beautiful thing.”
