100 tons of free potatoes coming to the Tacoma Dome

TACOMA (AP) — Washington state farmers will give away more than 200,000 pounds of potatoes at the Tacoma Dome on Thursday as part of an effort to get 1 million pounds of potatoes into the hands of people in need.

The potatoes were meant to be sold to restaurants or turned into french fries, tater tots and hash browns, but then the pandemic hit.

A group of potato farmers said with so many restaurants closed, their storage bins are full.

Thursday’s event will be first come, first served and will start at 11 a.m. at the Tacoma Dome parking lots.

The Washington State Potato Commission has coordinated with local volunteers to help hand out the bags of potatoes, which will be loaded directly into vehicles.
