PORT ANGELES – Port Angeles Police have arrested a suspect in a Malicious Harassment case stemming from an egg-throwing incident at a racial justice rally last Saturday, June 13.
Jeffrey Dunn of Clallam Bay (age unknown) turned himself in to Sheriff’s Deputies after police asked for the public’s help in identifying the suspect and reporting what they saw and heard.
Malicious Harassment is Washington state’s Hate Crime statute, which is a felony and, as Deputy Police Chief Jason Viada tells us, more charges are possible.
“It also appears that Assault 4 was committed, but it was committed as part of a hate crime and that has to do with the makeup of the group of people that were in front of the courthouse when the event occurred.”
Dunn drove past the demonstration multiple times, shouting and throwing eggs at them. Even before the police asked for public input, Dunn’s name, along with witness photos of him driving by, began to appear on social media. Dunn, who does not appear to be shying away from accusations, went as far as to post a witness photo of himself tossing eggs from his truck as his profile picture on Facebook.
Viada points out that Malicious Harassment can be a complicated case to investigate and prosecute, and that the investigation has barely begun.
“His case is going to be reviewed by the Prosecutor’s Office. He’s going to appear in court. He’s going to enjoy due process just as all Americans do, and the other thing is that it’s really important for everyone to remember, the case investigation doesn’t stop at the moment of arrest. The case investigation can continue after arrest. There are more people to talk to and more data and evidence to be gathered.”
