PORT ANGELES – Clallam County set a single-day record for number of positive COVID-19 cases Friday.

Five new cases were reported. Two of the new cases were connected to previous positive cases. However, three are unrelated and represent new community spread.

County Health officer Dr. Allison Berry Unthank says eleven cases in the last week puts in jeopardy chances of moving the county into Phase 3 later this summer. It also could mean a roll back to Phase 1, especially if state officials deem it appropriate due to bigger case numbers in other parts of the state.

“We are certainly seeing a rise in cases. We’ve had new cases pretty much every day. And we anticipate that will continue and likely increase in the coming weeks with the significant rise in cases that we’re seeing around the country and across the state. We do anticipate ongoing challenges with controlling this virus, which really brings home the critical importance of infection prevention locally. I think at this point we are, we’re not trying to get our cases to 0 right now. We are just trying to keep them as low as possible.”

Clallam County has performed 6,315 tests. 55 were positive with 230 tests pending. Only three people were briefly hospitalized and 41 have now fully recovered. There have been zero deaths in Clallam County due to COVID-19.
