PORT ANGELES – Federal lands on the Olympic Peninsula are under higher fire danger warnings.
Tuesday, Olympic National Park and National Forest officials announced moving lands to moderate fire danger. The change doesn’t affect fire restrictions at this point.
They say visitors on public lands can still enjoy campfires while in campgrounds or while dispersed camping. However, they urge more caution making sure fires are not left unattended and are out completely before leaving them. It is recommended that visitors check with local officials for the latest fire regulations.
Due to the nature of the fragile and dry alpine vegetation, fires are never allowed above elevation of 3500 feet.
Clallam County is already under its annual summer burn ban. It could be tightened if dry conditions persist.
