All wildfires in ONP appear to be under control

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK – Numerous fires started by last week’s lightening storm in Olympic National Park are mostly contained.

As of Saturday, 8 of the 9 fires were 80% contained or better and one smaller fire was being monitored and allowed to run its course. The only fire that could be described as a large fire, along East Beach Road, was 98% contained after burning 84 acres. The next largest fire, the 2-acre Cold Creek fire, was 85% contained.

In a news release, park officials reminded us that naturally occurring wildfires are an integral part of forest ecosystems on the Olympic Peninsula, and said they expect fires in remote areas to continue to smolder until we get some good rain in the Fall.

They added that no trail closures due to fire are in place at this time.
