Burn Ban kicks into high and local firefighters are staying put for now

PORT ANGELES – Because of the hot and dry conditions locally, the Clallam County Burn Ban has now been modified to a “HIGH” fire danger.

Campfires will still be allowed so long as they’re a maximum of 3 feet in diameter and two feet in height, but they must be contained within a concrete or metal fire pit located in an approved campground or on private property.

The exceptions to this modification are those campgrounds within the Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest, which are not regulated by the county, but as of this afternoon the Park Service has not altered their current campfire rules.

With devastating fires burning in other regions, we often see local firefighters traveling across state and beyond to lend a hand.

But that has not happened so far this season, as Clallam 2 Fire/Rescue Chief Jake Patterson explained Tuesday on the Todd Ortloff Show.

“We haven’t been able to field enough firefighters to send out any resources yet, but we’ve had a couple requests. I mean, we’re all by nature, ‘We want to help’. But there is also the…we need to make sure we have adequate protection back home, especially in this, you know, this next week is going to be hot and dry. They don’t want us to send all our resources out of the region only to have a fire in the region and not have enough responses. So right now, Fire District 2 doesn’t have anybody out on deployment.”
