Hype about Northern Lights in the NW a “big miss”

PORT ANGELES (AP/KONP staff) — The initially promising U.S. forecast for the northern lights has gone bust.

The head of operations at the U.S. government’s space weather prediction center now says those of us living in the northern US have essentially zero chance of seeing the northern lights this week.

Forecasters had thought they would be viewable as far south as Oregon this week starting Wednesday night. Robert Rutledge of the Space Weather Prediction Center said the agency had high hopes for Thursday and Friday nights as well, but then downgraded the forecast because the chances turned out to be a “big miss.”

In the “sour grapes” department, this week’s visibility in Clallam County wasn’t going to be that great anyway.
