Suspects being sought in shooting near Sequim

By Pepper Fisher

SEQUIM – There was a shooting yesterday near Sequim that left a man with gunshot wounds in both legs, and Sheriff’s investigators are still trying to piece together what exactly happened as they search for two suspects.

Detective Sgt. Eric Munger says at about 4:20am, Deputies were dispatched to the 800 block of Youngquist Road, which branches off of Palo Alto Road east of Sequim, for a shooting incident. They arrived to find a 54-year-old male resident of the property had been shot.

The large parcel has people living in multiple RVs, at least one of whom was a witness to the incident, and the victim was with a friend who also witnessed the shooting.

Witnesses told deputies the victim and his 39-year-old friend were sitting in his motorhome when there was a knock at the door. They went outside to greet two men they’d never seen before. For reasons not yet clear, Sgt. Munger says a confrontation ensued, the suspects produced firearms, and one of them fired at least two rounds, striking the victim below the knee in both legs.

A neighbor heard the shots and came out to see what was happening. The report says the neighbor chased the two suspects on foot to Youngquist Road where he lost sight of them.

We asked Sgt. Munger if he could provide a description of the suspects.

“The descriptions are pretty generic. You know, white males, late 20s, five-ten and six-one possibly. My theory is, they had a vehicle further down the road, but you know, we have nothing to confirm that.”

Detectives have since processed the crime scene and conducted follow up interviews, though they still have work to do on that front.

“The victim, we haven’t gotten a good interview with yet because he’s been flown to Harborview and is being repaired. So we only plan on trying to interview him tomorrow. The witness that was there with him was in a pretty heavy state of inebriation and not a real great witness for us. And the guy that chased them was never real close to them and didn’t hear anything that was being said. So unfortunately, we don’t have a ton.”

Sgt. Munger say the victim’s injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
