North Olympic Peninsula braces for snow

PORT ANGELES – Snowy weather is moving into western Washington. But the north Olympic Peninsula may be spared the deepest snows.

A coating of snow arrived yesterday (Wednesday) and again overnight in Thursday for the Port Angeles and Sequim area.

The National Weather Service says scattered snow flurries will continue here with less than an inch of total accumulation.

Fraser Valley outflow will increase and that may bring more “Strait Effect” snow locally. That’s when cold air causes snow to develop as it mixes across the Strait and collides on the north side of the Olympics.

More widespread lowland snow will increase Friday evening and could pile up through the early part of Saturday.  The north Peninsula is expected to see about four inches of snow overnight Friday into early Saturday. Other parts of Western Washington could see nearly a foot.

Cold temperatures into the 20’s at night and barely above freezing during the day will continue through the weekend.

Another storm system is possible late Sunday, potentially yielding snow at the onset before transitioning to a mix and/or rain.  Forecasters say there’s still high uncertainty in the forecast especially after Friday.
