Despite restrictions, Sequim hosting first 4th of July fireworks show in decades

By Pepper Fisher

SEQUIM – For the first time in recent memory, the City of Sequim will be hosting a fireworks display on the Fourth of July.

The plan calls for staging the launch area on the playfields at Carrie Blake Park and allowing residents to attend the event in the surrounding portions of the park, with certain Covid protocols in place.

Communications and Marketing Director Barbara Hanna told the City Council this week that the latest guidance for outdoor events of this kind allows for 600 people per acre as long as they wear masks. She says folks in the Public Works Department are still determining exactly how many acres they’ll be able to utilize and should have those figures very soon.

Hanna says initial conversations had them considering adding music and vendors to the event but, for now, they’ll have to wait.

“Yeah, we were waiting for the Governor’s regulations to come out on special events and fairs and those just got released last week. The requirements to have live music and to have food are just, they’re more restrictive than what we are in a position to accommodate. So we’re going to offer the community a wonderful fireworks show to help them celebrate their holiday, and hope that everyone will, you know, enjoy it from many, many places in the city. People won’t need to come to the park to see it. You know, we’re a valley town, so it’s pretty flat, and we’ve got lots of people that live up in the hills that will be able to enjoy it as well.”

The City of Port Angeles will also be hosting their annual fireworks show on the waterfront this year, and we’re told by Chamber Director Marc Abshire that much like last summer, no associated events are planned in order to comply with restrictions on gatherings.
