Man arrested for carrying rifle onto ferry without a permit

MUKILTEO, Wash. (AP) — Washington state troopers say they arrested a man who carried a semi-automatic rifle aboard a ferry in Mukilteo.

The man walked onto the Tokitae around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday as passengers boarded for a trip to Whidbey Island.

Ferry workers called authorities when they saw 60 rounds of ammunition partially concealed around the man’s waist. The captain held the vessel at the dock after the man walked aboard and immediately entered a restroom. Troopers waited him out and found the man’s “AR-15 style weapon” partly concealed under his coat. He was escorted off the ferry and booked into Snohomish County Jail for carrying a concealed weapon without a proper permit.

State Patrol Trooper Kevin Fortino said the man appeared to be drunk.

Ferry spokesperson Ian Sterling said workers have had run-ins with the man in the past when he refused to wear a mask.

Passengers are allowed to carry a gun on board a ferry, open or concealed, as long as they’re doing it safely and have the proper permit.
