Sequim Chamber names their Person of the Year for 2020

SEQUIM – The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce has named their Person of the Year for 2020. And much like the unusual year we all just experienced, their choice of a winner was unconventional as well.

Due to mandated lockdowns that shuttered businesses and agencies everywhere, Executive Director Anji Scalf says the committee agreed by an overwhelming margin to acknowledge Sequim’s Essential Workers for their annual award.

“The committee decided that there’s just nobody that fits the bill more than the people that went above and beyond to keep our community safe. From volunteers to grocery store workers and healthcare workers to, you know, our sanitation workers, our teachers. It’s just amazing, all those people that worked hard.”

The Chamber will be recognizing essential workers at their ‘Picnic in the Park’ event in August at Pioneer Park, an event that Scalf says almost didn’t happen.

“In December and January we were still in the thick of the pandemic. So we were like, ‘We’re not going to do an event yet. We’re going to wait until things start to open up.’ And now that we’re at this state where we can be open, it’s good to be able to announce that we will have an event recognizing folks in our community and inviting all of our legislators and our lawmakers to join us in thanking these essential workers.”

Picnic in the Park will begin at 11:45 on August 25.
