Girl’s body recovered from irrigation pond after drowning accident

GEORGE, Wash. – A 10-year-old Issaquah girl died Monday in a suspected drowning in an irrigation pond near George in Eastern Washington.

The girl was vacationing with family and slipped under the surface of the 3-acre pond and disappeared while playing with other children, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

Firefighters searched the shoulder-deep water for over an hour without finding the girl.

The responders then suspected the girl may have been sucked into the pond’s siphon, which supplies a waterfall and other facilities at the site, so they disassembled the siphon pipe and confirmed the girl’s body was inside.

An autopsy is scheduled, but sheriff’s officials said all early indications are that the girl’s death was a tragic accident.
