Forest fire in Blyn takes nearly 3 days to suppress

By Pepper Fisher

BLYN – Firefighters from the DNR are still working on a fire in the Blyn area that started late Friday night and burned about 18 acres of brush and trees.

DNR Spokesman Joe Smillie:

“They’re still out there working, you know, that’s a lot of thick stuff there on the forest floor to put out. So they’re working on that. You may still see some smoke throughout the day, but we’ve got a really good line around it. It’s just a matter of closing it out at this point.”

It took until Sunday to get a dozer line around the fire to contain it. Firefighters on the ground were aided by two aircraft in controlling the blaze.

Clallam 3 firefighters were the first on the scene Friday. Assistant Fire Chief Dan Orr says calls were coming in from all over the area.

“It was very well seen from Jefferson. We heard we were getting calls from Whidbey Island of a fire that was burning. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I know in Jefferson that they were getting a lot of calls.”

It was a busy weekend for DNR personnel, who also had to suppress a smaller blaze up above the Lost Mountain Road area when a slash pile caught fire at a logging operation.

Investigators have not determined the cause of either fire.
