
The fifth ranked Peninsula Pirates needed all their guns for their first-place showdown with the sixth ranked Whatcom Orcas, but the pirates would be short of their big gun and lost a wild game to the Orcas 77-71. Pirate point guard and leading scorer Millie Long sat out the game with a sickness as well as three of her teammates. The red-hot Orcas jumped out to a 20-point lead with just a minute into the second quarter but the never give up the ship Pirates kept the pressure on and trailed 47-38 at the half. Pirates point guard Tayvia Cabatbat used her lightning quick speed to get into the paint and lead the Pirates with eighteen points. Freshman Tasiah Little, out of Blanding Utah, hit four 3-pointers and was good for fifteen points. Former Sequim Wolf Hope Glasser hit for ten points and pulled down seven rebounds. The Pirates took a 4-point lead with 8:46 left in the game and lead again at the 5-minute mark but the Orcas hit some big time 3-point shots down the wire for the 6-point win. The Pirates did not help themselves with twenty-seven turnovers. The Pirates are now in second place in the Northern Division with a 2-1 record and a 11-3 overall record.

The Pirate men had no problem with Whatcom blowing out the Orcas 85 – 65. The hot shooting Pirates took their biggest lead of the game leading by twenty-three points at the 2:51 mark of the first half. The Pirates lead at the half 36 – 18. Pirate Head Coach Donald Rollman has a wealth of talent coming off his bench with Rayshawn Harris coming up big as he did in the win at Skagit. Harris had a game high twenty-two points while Michael Medlock a 6’4″ Freshman out of Las Vegas also came off the bench to hit for fifteen points. Soph. Jaylin Reed hit for ten points to go with eight rebounds and four assists. Roosevelt Williams Jr. had a solid game with nine points, five rebounds and seven assists. The Pirates are now 2-1 in Northern Division play and 10-5 overall. The Pirates will travel to Edmonds next Wednesday

In high school basketball action tonight, the big game is in Poulsbo. That’s where the eighth-ranked Port Angeles Roughriders try to pull the upset over the #1 ranked North Kitsap Vikings. Tipoff is at 7pm. The Sequim Wolves they will host Kingston at 7 pm. The Port Angeles Lady Roughriders have a big game at home against a tough North Kitsap Viking squad. That game tips off at 7pm. The Sequim Lady Wolves will be on the road tomorrow night at Klahowya.
