SEQUIM – Clallam District 3 fire investigators went to work Monday morning to determine what caused two house fires in rapid succession Sunday night.
The first 911 call came in just before 11:00pm from a resident in the 3000 block of Woodcock Road, where the caller said he smelled smoke, opened his bedroom door and found the front porch engulfed in flames and spreading to the living room, blocking his only way out of the mobile home.
The man was forced to lie on the floor as the house filled with smoke until first responders arrived and passed him through his bedroom window. The man was transported to Olympic Medical Center with smoke inhalation but was otherwise uninjured.
Shortly after leaving that fire, Clallam 3 was dispatched to a second structure fire in the nearby 100 block of House Road. That caller was also awakened by the smell of smoke and also found their front porch on fire.
The homeowner evacuated his family from the house and sprayed the fire with a garden hose until firefighters arrive minutes later.
The fire investigation team reported Monday morning that the cause is likely accidental in nature.
