LOCAL SPORTS: Road to state tournament starts tonight for local hoop teams

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Roughriders, the #1 Seed in the District 3 Class AA basketball tournament, will host the #8 seed Franklin Pierce Cardinals tonight at Roughrider gym at 6 pm. The Cardinals finished third in the South Puget Sound League with a 10-4 league record and a 11-7 overall record. The Cardinals score forty-six points per game and give up 40 points per game. The Roughriders are the Co-Champions of the Olympic League with a 13-1 league record and a 14-4 overall record. They average forty-nine points per game and give up thirty-six points per game. If the Roughriders win, they will play Thursday night at Sammamish High School against the winner of the Sequim – Enumclaw game. A Roughrider loss and the Riders would host the winner of the #16 seed Highline – #10 seed Kingston game Thursday night.

The #5 seed Sequim Wolves travel to #4 Enumclaw tonight for a 6 pm tip off. Enumclaw finished second in the South Puget Sound League with a 13-1 league record and a 15-4 overall record. Enumclaw averages sixty points per game and is giving up thirty-seven points per game. Sequim the Co-Champs of the Olympic league with a 13-1 league record and a 17-3 overall record average fifty-four points per game and give up thirty-nine points per game. The winner of this game will play the winner of the Port Angeles-Franklin Pierce game Thursday night at Sammamish High School. The loser will host the winner of tonight’s #12 seed Tyee – #13 seed Orting game on Thursday night.

The Port Angeles Roughrider Boys will open district play tomorrow night at Roughrider Gymnasium against the Franklin Pierce Cardinals with the tip off set for 6 pm.

The Peninsula Pirates have a home doubleheader tomorrow night hosting Skagit, with the sixth-ranked Pirate Women tipping off at 5 pm and the men’s game will follow. The Skagit men are ranked #1 in the NWAC with the Pirates beating the Cardinals earlier this season in Mount Vernon.
