PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Roughrider Boys jumped out to a 18-4 early lead over Franklin Peirce and the game was never in doubt with the Roughriders getting the 68-51 opening round win. The Roughriders led at the half 42-23. Sr. Wyatt Dunning put on another offensive show hitting for twenty-eight points. Point Guard Xander Maestas did a great job managing the Cardinals extended zone trap defense. Maestas and John Vaara both hit for twelve points. Parker Nickerson hit for seven points and Quanah Wheeler had five points. 6’4″ Sophomore Isaiah Shamp gave coach Kasey Ulin some great minutes off the bench and scored four points. The Roughriders will now take on the White River Hornets in a district semifinal game Tomorrow night at Sammamish high school with the tip off time at 6 pm. Enumclaw and North Kitsap will play in the other semifinal.

In the girls district semifinal tonight, Port Angeles hosts Sequim at 6 pm. The Wolves are coming off a big road win upsetting Enumclaw 54-45. The Roughriders blew out Franklin Peirce Tuesday night leading at times by more than forty points. The winner will play in the Championship game at 5 pm at Highline High School on Saturday while the loser will play at 1 pm. Sammamish and White River play in the other Semi Final.

Peninsula men’s basketball coach Donald Rollman might want to petition the NWAC to schedule whoever is the #1 ranked team that night. For the second time this season the Pirates earned another big time win over #1 ranked Skagit Valley in a game that was never close 83-69. The Pirates shot a sizzling 55% from the field and were 10 of 19 from the 3-point stripe for 52%. The Pirates led 42-20 at the half. The Pirates won the boards as well out rebounding Skagit 39-26. Isaiah Sampson led the way for the Pirates with sixteen points and eight boards. Michael Medlock was hot off the bench with fifteen points. Roosevelt Williams Jr. Hit for twelve points, Jaylin Reed and Rayshawn Harris hit for ten points. The Pirates are now 5-3 in Conference play and 13-7 Overall. The Pirates have a huge game at home on Saturday against Olympic.

With the Peninsula Pirates Women’s team winning their fifth game in a row, a 64-47 win over Skagit Valley, Peninsula A.D. Rick Ross might want to dial up Palo Alto and see if Stanford’s Tara Vanderveer wants a warmup game before her NCAA tournament. Pirates’ coach Allison Crumb has her club playing at an NWAC-championship level. The Pirates jumped out to a 20-8 first quarter lead and never looked back. Hope Glasser led the way with nineteen points and six rebounds. Millie Long hit for seventeen points, pulled down seven rebounds, dished out six assists and had 5 steals. The Pirates are one game behind Whatcom with a 7-1 conference record and are 16-3 overall. The Pirates host Olympic Saturday afternoon at 4 pm.
