LOCAL SPORTS: Roughrider boys and girls hoops teams ready for state

PORT ANGELES — Both Port Angeles Roughriders basketball teams will play in loser-out first round games at the Class AA State Tournament at the Yakima SunDome on Wednesday. Mike Poindexter’s Roughriders will open the state tournament with a 9 am tip off against the #11 seed Prosser Mustangs in the girls bracket. Prosser, 18-6 on the season, are led by 6’0″ senior and Idaho State-signed Halle Wright who averages 20 ppg and is the league’s MVP. Prosser beat Enumclaw in their regional game 75-55. The loser of this game is done for the season. The winner is guaranteed 2 more games and will play #5 seed Archbishop Murphy Thursday morning at 9 am. The game will be carried live on KONP  with the Roughrider locker-room show at 8:45 which will feature Port Angeles Senior Forward Eve Burke.

Kasey Ulin’s Roughriders, coming off a heart breaking 58-48 loss to 2nd seed Lynden, will play #10-seed Franklin Pierce Wednesday at 5:30 pm. The Cardinals beat #15 seed W.F. West in their regional game. The Roughriders beat Franklin Pierce in a district playoff game 68-51 in Port Angeles. The loser of this game is done for the season the winner is guaranteed two more games and the winner will play North Kitsap at 5:30 pm on Thursday. The KONP broadcast will begin at 5:15 pm with Roughrider Senior Point Guard Xander Maestas.

In NWAC action, the Peninsula Pirates received an early Christmas present as Skagit Valley shocked 4th ranked Whatcom. That puts the 6th-ranked Pirates in first place with a 10-1 conference record a game ahead of Whatcom. The Pirates blew out Edmonds 76-34 Saturday in Port Angeles. Former Sequim Wolf Hope Glasser led the Pirates with 17 points and former Port Angeles Roughrider Madison Cooke had 14 points.

The Peninsula Pirate men lost another heart breaker at home to Edmonds in OT 92-89. 3 Pirates scored over 20 points. Roosevelt Williams hit for 22 points, Jaylin Reed had 21 points, and Isaiah Sampson had 20 points. The Pirates are now tied for 3rd place with two other teams in the conference with a 6-5 record and a14-9 overall record. The Pirates travel to Everett for a huge game on Wednesday.
