Kid’s free fishing day in Sequim is this Saturday

By Pepper Fisher

SEQUIM — The Annual Kid’s Fishing Day at Carrie Blake Park in Sequim is this Saturday from 8:00am to 2:00pm, to coincide with the opening of trout fishing season statewide.

All kids 14 years of age and younger are invited to fish, free of charge, at the pond on the north side of the park. No fishing license is required, and kids can keep two fish each.

The event is sponsored by the hard-working members of Puget Sound Anglers North Olympic Peninsula Chapter. Boardmember Dave Croonquist says this year they’ve stocked the pond with 1,000 fish for this event.

“It will be about 600 that are in the 1 pound range. We’ve got another couple hundred that are going to be in the 2-3 pound range. And we’ll have some jumbo’s that will be breaking four pounds, maybe up to 5 pounds. Some kids catching their first fish and he’s catching fish bigger than anything their parents have ever caught. So, it’s fun.”

Volunteers will provide bait and even a fishing pole if needed, and they’ll have a fish cleaning station set up so the kids can take their cleaned fish home on ice.
