PORT ANGELES — Watching the Port Angeles Roughriders girls fast pitch team during pre-game warm-ups yesterday, you got the feeling the Roughriders were proud of their #1 state ranking. Then they went out and played like a #1-ranked team, dominating 11th– ranked North Mason 8-2. Catcher Zoe Smithson did not waste any time, leading the game off with a hard-hit single. Then the player of the game 3rd baseman Taylor Worthington hit the first of her 3 doubles scoring Smithson and later scoring herself. In the 2nd inning, Roughrider left fielder Heidi Leitz blasted a whistling shot over the center field fence, if not for the brisk gusty wind coming off Juan De Fuca, Leitz might have lost the ball in the nearby Elwha River. In the 6th inning Leitz doubled and scored her 2nd run. Asked about the play of Leitz in the last few games, Roughrider Skipper Randy Steinman simply smiled and said “yeah, she has played really well”. Roughrider Teagan Clark was solid again going 7 innings spreading out 7 hits and 2 runs. The shock of the night was Kingston upsetting now 6th ranked Olympic 7-6. The Roughriders now lead the league with a 7-1 record while Olympic drops to 5-2. The Roughriders travel to Olympic on Thursday.
The Sequim Wolves improved their league record to 5-4 with an easy 15-1 win over Bremerton. Pitcher Hannah Bates got the win going 5 innings giving up just 2 hits and one run.
