LOCAL SPORTS: PA and Sequim fast pitch teams get good draws into district tournament

SEQUIM — The state’s 15th-ranked Sequim Wolves girls fast pitch team received an early Christmas present, by getting the 6th seed in the district 2/3 fast pitch tournament. The Wolves will play #3 seed Sammamish Friday at Noon in Lacey. Sammamish is ranked 23rd in the state but because they are the Champions of a weak King Co league, they got the automatic 3rd seed. If the Wolves win, they would play the winner of the #2 seed Enumclaw vs #7 seed Fife game Saturday at 10 am. That is a semifinal game winner to the district championship game. Sequim would’ve already earned a trip to the state tournament in Selah. Enumclaw is ranked 13th in the state as again the Olympic League is perceived to be a much tougher league

The state’s 3rd-ranked Port Angeles Roughriders, as expected, received the #1 seed and will play #8-seed White River who is ranked 20th in the state. That game will be Friday at 2 pm. The Roughriders are strong favorites, and a win puts the Roughriders in Selah for the state tournament. Now here is the irony: The Roughriders in their semifinal would have to play the winner of #4 seed North Kitsap vs #5 seed Olympic. Teams in their own league are not supposed to play each other in the first round. But the committee skipped switching Fife with North Kitsap and having the Vikings playing played Enumclaw and Fife playing Olympic.

The forecast for Friday and Saturday is sunny with temperatures in the high 60s. KONP will broadcast both Sequim and Port Angeles games through the tournament. Airtime Friday begins with the Wolves Clubhouse show at 11 am followed by the Roughrider Clubhouse show at 11:30 am. First pitch of the Wolves game is at Noon. The Roughriders have a 2 pm first pitch start. Oly Archibald and Jim Cheney will have the live play by play.

Sequim Wolf 3 Sport star Hannah Wagner has signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Peninsula College. Wagner is a 4-year starter, 2-year Captain and a First Team All Olympic League Selection for Sequim. Wagner is also a standout on the Wolves basketball team and golf team.
