PA middle and high school students will start school day later

PORT ANGELES – School will start later in the fall for some students in the Port Angeles School District.

The school board has agreed to start middle and high school about a half hour later starting this fall. But due to transportation issues it means there will be some shifting of  bell times at other schools.

Beginning this year, PA High School will start at 8:15 and dismiss at 3:05. Stevens Middle School will begin at 8:35 and get out at 3:20. All the elementary schools will begin the day at 7:45 instead of the current staggered start for some of the schools. Here is the bell schedule for all PA schools beginning this fall:

Superintendent Marty Brewer says research shows that later start times improve middle and high school students’ academic, health, and safety outcomes.

Earlier this spring the district surveyed staff, students, and families regarding their thoughts about this change. Of the 1,264 respondents, 80% indicated it is important, somewhat important, or were neutral regarding the move to start times later for middle and high school students.
