Sheriff: Man killed in Washington Cascades climbing fall

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. (AP) — The Chelan County sheriff says a man from Vancouver, Washington, died in a climbing accident in the Cascade Mountains. Sheriff Brian Burnett says the 44-year-old’s climbing partner reported that the two were climbing on Icicle Buttress south of Leavenworth, Washington, when heavy rain moved in. She was lowered to the bottom of the pitch and the man was following when he fell about 100 feet. The woman flagged down a United States Forest Service officer who happened to be in the area after she heard a noise and saw him fall. A sheriffs search and rescue crew found him dead from apparent injuries during the fall.
