PA City Council to consider accepting nearly $1M share of opioid settlement

PORT ANGELES – On Tuesday, September 6, the Port Angeles City Council will discuss the terms of a massive settlement the State of Washington reached with 3 separate opioid distributors.

Under the terms of the settlement, the State is eligible to receive up to $518 million, to be paid out over 17 years.

The settlement provides that Washington cities and counties are eligible to receive up to $215 million from the State’s share. That money must be spent on efforts to combat the opioid epidemic. Out of that $215 million, Port Angeles is eligible to receive up to $988,000.

The settlement is subject to conditions. First, at least 90% of Washington cities and counties with a population over 10,000 must join the settlement by September 23. If that level of participation is not reached, the settlement is void.

Second, the money will be paid out over a period of years. Port Angeles would receive almost $55,000 a year over 17 years.

Third, in early years, 15% will be deducted for attorney’s fees.

Fourth, acceptance of the funds comes with an obligation to account for the use of the money and make periodic reports.

City staff are recommending the council authorize the City Manager to approve and implement those conditions.

The local fire and police departments, among others, are working up plans on how to best put the funding to use.
