LOCAL SPORTS: Sequim and PA battle in volleyball and soccer

(Undated) — In cross country action at Olympic High School, Port Angeles Roughrider Jack Gladfelter won the two-mile race and freshman Leia Larson placed 4th in her first varsity race.

There will be a wild pack of purple-hungry Wolves headed west to Port Angeles as the Sequim Wolves championship-contending soccer and volleyball teams will take on the home team Roughriders.  In soccer action Tuesday, Sequim blew out North Mason 12-0. The Wolves are led by “The Dungeness Rocket”, junior Taryn Johnson. Johnson had a hat trick against the Bulldogs Tuesday night as well as junior Jennifer Gomez. In last year’s win over the Roughriders, Johnson also had a hat trick. The Roughriders will counter with senior standout Ana Petty, who is already having discussions with Peninsula College, and junior Paige Mason. Wolves Head Coach Ken Darling, Roughrider Head Coach Daniel Horton and Roughrider senior goalie Sayla Commerton agree anyone in the league can win the Olympic League Championship. Kickoff is set tonight for 6:45 pm at Peninsula college.

In volleyball action, the defending Olympic League Champion Wolves will look to dominate the net with a much larger front line than the Roughriders. The Wolves took 3 of 4 games at North Mason Tuesday night. The Wolves are led by heavily recruited 6’1″ senior Kendall Hastings. Against North Mason, Hastings had six kills and six aces. Sidney Hegtvet was 19 of 19 with four aces on her serves. Angel Wagner served 11 straight points in game four. The Roughriders will counterattack with the athletic senior Lily Halberg and sophomore Heidi Leitz. First serve is set for 6:45 pm.
