Large gravel spill shuts down Black Diamond Road (and services) for hours

By Pepper Fisher

PORT ANGELES – A semi-driver lost a large load of gravel on Black Diamond Road late this morning, taking out a power line, phone and internet in the process and completely closing the road.

Clallam 2 Deputy Chief Justin Grider called in this report at 11:30.

“A semi hauling gravel has lost its load between Wellman and Fors Road on Black Diamond. We will have the road shut down, probably for another hour or so, as we do cleanup operations. But in the interim, the road is closed to all traffic. So, if people live from Fors south on Black Diamond, they’ll need to access it through Little River Road, or if they can access Wellman, they can come up from 101 and Black Diamond.”

At the time of the call, Grider said they were still waiting for a loader to arrive and begin the cleanup operation. The PUD had already restored power, but phone and internet lines were still down.

Grider gave us a follow-up call later in the afternoon with this update.

“Siting operations will continue until about 5:00 p.m. tonight. The road is open to residents, they will flag you through. Internet and power is restored to the area as they get the rest of the road patched up and cleaned up, and they should be done again by 5:00 tonight.”
