LOCAL SPORTS: Prep tennis, soccer, volleyball results

PAHS Freshmen Mary Halberg served 9 straight points in a come-from-behind win over Kingston

The high school fall sports season is now under full steam and both Sequim and Port Angeles have some outstanding teams performing at a high level.

In tennis, the Roughrider boys do it again they are now 8-0 on the season after sweeping Olympic 7-0. In singles action, Reef Gelder won both matches 6-1 6-0.

Nathan Basden won 6-1, 6-0; Reid Schmidt won 6-1, 6-1. In doubles action, Edun Baily and Jacob Miller won 6-0, 6-1. Zak Alton and Elijah Flodstrom won 6-2 6-1. Tate Alton and Luke Flodstrom won 6-0, 6-1. Kellen Garcelon and Isaac Shamp won 6-1, 6-0. The Roughriders travel today to Bainbridge with the first serve at 4 pm.

In soccer action, the Roughriders had a hard-fought, 2-1 last-minute win over Bremerton. Anna Petty scored in the first half to tie the score 1-1 at the half then with just 3 minutes left, Roughrider Paige Mason scored from 30 yards out on a shot the just went under the cross bar and struck the upper left corner of the net. It was a spectacular magnificent goal that carried all the excitement worth of being a World Cup game winner as the Roughriders exploded off their bench. The Roughriders are in 3rd place in the Olympic league with a 5-2 record.

Another soccer legend was taking out the “King” in Kingston as the “Dungeness Rocket” Taryn Johnson scored 2 goals for the 2-0 Sequim win. The Wolves are 4-3 on the season and in 4th place.

In volleyball, Port Angeles swept Bremerton 25-9, 25-10 and 25-17. In the 3rd game, the Roughriders were down 9-13 when freshman Mary Halberg served 9 straight points to give the Roughriders a 18-14 lead for the 25-17 win. The Sequim Wolves swept Kingston 3-0. Port Angeles, Sequim and Kingston are all tied for 2nd with 5-2 records.

There is a big swim meet today as the Wolves swim in from the Dungeness to take on a very good Roughrider swim team. The meet starts at 3 pm.

There is a new #1 ranked men’s soccer team in the NWAC and it belongs to the Peninsula Pirates men’s team. The Peninsula Pirates women’s team is also ranked #1. The Pirates have a doubleheader today at Skagit Valley. The Women kickoff at 2 pm the men at 4:15 pm.
