LOCAL SPORTS: Sequim tops PA in volleyball, PA tops Sequim in soccer

SEQUIM — The Sequim Wolves volleyball team took 3 of 4 over Port Angeles with scores of 25-8, 21-25, 25-10 and 25-21 to cement their 2nd place position in the Olympic league with a 7-2 record. The Roughriders fall to 3rd place with a 6-3 record. The Wolves 6’2″ senior Kendall Hastings dominated the net.

In soccer action, the Roughriders came from behind twice to beat Sequim 3-2. Taryn Johnson opened the scoring at the 3:30 mark of the first half but Julia Baeder of the Roughriders scored a minute later for a 1-1 tie at the half. Taryn Johnson scored her 2nd goal at the 33rd minute for the 2-1 Wolves lead but Anna Petty scored on a penalty kick at the 24-minute mark to tie the game up at 2-2. 2 minutes later Becca Manson scored a goal to give the Roughriders the 3-2 win. Port Angeles will host Kingston tonight at 6:45 pm.

In tennis action, the Roughriders improved their record to 10-1, blanking Kingston 7-0. Roughrider coach Brian Gundersen knew his Roughriders were a much older and talented team than Kingston, so Gundersen let some of his underclassmen get some valuable varsity time. In singles it was Nathan Basden winning 6-0, 6-0; Reid Schmidt won 6-0, 6-1; and Mathew Miller won 7-6, 7-6. In doubles action, Luke Flodstrom and Tate Alton won 6-0, 6-3; Carter Gundersen and Austin Worthington won 6-0, 7-5; C.J. Elliott and Keaton Hoch won 6-1 6-0 and Garret Buerer and Grant Butterworth won 6-1, 6-2. The Roughriders host Sequim Thursday night for senior night.

There is swimming action today with state power Bainbridge at Sequim and East Jefferson is at Port Angeles. Both events start at 3 pm.

There is a Cross Country meet at Sequim involving Kingston and North Mason. That event starts at 4 pm. In NWAC soccer action Peninsula hits the road to Whatcom.
