PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Roughrider tennis team has an Olympic League champion, and it is senior Reef Gelder. The number two seed Gelder beat his old rival from Sequim, the very talented and #1 seed Garrett Little 6-4 and 7-6. Roughrider head coach Brian Gundersen was elated for both tennis stars. “Reef and Garrett have been playing well all season, it was no surprise to see them in the singles final. Reef played some of his best tennis of the year and was able to overcome a very high-quality opponent.”
Edun Bailey and Jacob Miller placed 2nd in the doubles, 16-team bracket to qualify for district. Also heading to district as a #5 singles seed is Nathan Basden. Gelder, Bailey and Miller will be on the Roughrider VIP Halftime Show this Friday night during KONP’s broadcast of the PAHS football game.

The other Roughrider team dominating competition, the swim team, blew out Olympic 139-36. The Roughriders won 11 of the 12 events. Earning first place finishes were Harper McGuire with four. Mackenzie Dubois with four. Yau Fu and Lizzy Shaw with three. Rachel Cooper and Sara Wilson with two. Grace Possinger and Danika Asgeirsson each won one event.

In other high school sports today, Port Angeles is hosting the Olympic League cross country championships today at 4:30 pm. In volleyball, the Roughriders will have to deal with a tough North Kitsap Viking team in Poulsbo. First serve at 6:45 pm. Sequim will host Bainbridge at 6:15 pm. In soccer, a huge game in Poulsbo the Roughriders is 8-2 just a half game behind the 9-2 North Kitsap Vikings. Kickoff at 6:45. Sequim will host Bainbridge at 6:45 pm.
