LOCAL SPORTS: Weekend wrapped up season for many high school athletes

SEQUIM — In football action Friday night, the Sequim Wolves once again kept the good fight up until the end, giving 3rd place Bremerton a great game with the Knights winning 36-29. The Wolves end their season with a 2-7 record.

The Port Angeles Roughriders saved their best game for last blowing out North Mason 48-25. Parker Nickerson, Jason Hawes, Hunter Flores, Blake Solhberg, Josiah Long and Alex Angevine all had big nights. Alex Angevine set the tone early for the Roughriders with a circus catch for a touchdown and was named the “Firehouse Grill Player of the Game”. The Roughriders at 3-6 will have one more game. The Roughriders will play class 3A Chief Sealth this Friday night at Chief Sealth high school with the kickoff at 7:30 pm. Chief Sealth High School is located South of West Seattle and North of White Center. Chief Sealth is in the tough 3A Metro league and had a solid year with a 4-5 overall record. This is not a playoff game, and it will be the last game of the season for the Roughriders. The young Roughriders started just four seniors in their 22 first-string units Friday night, and could have a great season next year. The Roughriders will open the 2023 season with road games at Blaine and Anacortes.

In the District 3 tennis tournament, the Roughriders will send 3 to the state tournament next spring at the University of Washington. Reef Gelder placed 3rd and the doubles duo of Edun Bailey and Jacob Miller also placed 3rd. Nathan Basden went in as the #5 seed but went 1-2 and was eliminated. Congratulations to Basden for having an outstanding season. Garrett Little of Sequim was the district singles champion.

In the District 3 cross country meet, Roughrider Senior Jack Gladfelter is district champion with a time of 15:38. Max Baeder finished 5th with a time of 16:13. Landon Larson finished 18th. Overall, the Roughriders finished 4th. For the Roughrider girls, Leia Larson had a great run and finished 18th.

The Sequim girls had a great showing finishing 5th in the district. Kaitlyn Bloomenrader placed 6th. Liberty Mavy placed 16th.

For the Sequim boys Owen Randall finished 19th and Kowen Kasten finished 28th.

The Sequim Wolves and Port Angels Roughrider soccer teams have their District games set. The Wolves a #9 seed will host Clover Park a #16 seed with the kickoff at 7 pm tomorrow night. The #5 seed Roughriders will go on the road to #4 seed White River with the kickoff at 7 pm tomorrow night.

In volleyball action tonight, Port Angeles will host North Mason at 6:45.

Congratulations to the Peninsula College soccer teams they swept Skagit Saturday afternoon and both teams are Northern Division Champions and will be big favorites going into the NWAC tournament.
