LOCAL SPORTS: Sequim tops PA in volleyball, plus cross county and soccer tilts set

SEQUIM — It will be a very busy weekend for area high school athletes.

Let’s begin with volleyball where last night Sequim swept Port Angeles 25-21 25-20 25-21. Tomorrow Port Angeles will travel to Kingston to take on North Mason at 2 pm and Sequim will then take on 11th ranked North Kitsap at 4 pm. The district tournament will take place next Friday and Saturday.

In high school football action tonight, Port Angeles (3-6) will travel to White Center to take on (4-4) 3A Chief Sealth. The Seahawks are members of the tough Metro South League with powerhouse programs like Ingram and Franklin. The Seahawks went 4-4 on the season and finished 4th in the 8-team league. The Seahawks score just 19 ppg but only give up 21 ppg. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm.

In district soccer tonight, #5 seed Port Angeles travels to North Mason to take on #8 seed Lindberg with the kickoff set at 7 pm. The winner will take on the winner of the Sammamish – Olympic game Saturday at Franklin Pierce high school with the kickoff at 4 pm. The winner of that game will advance to the state tournament.

The Peninsula Pirates will host a quarter final doubleheader of the NWAC soccer tournament tomorrow. The Pirate women will take on Spokane at 4 pm and the Pirate men will take on Walla Walla at 6:15 pm.

It’s state tournament time for the Associated Press’ 8th-ranked Port Angeles Roughriders cross country team. The Roughriders will be at the Sun Willow Golf Course in Pasco on Saturday. The Roughriders are taking 9 boys and 1 girl to Pasco while the Sequim Wolves are taking 9 girls and 1 boy.

The Port Angeles swim and dive team will travel to Auburn and Mount Tahoma for their district meet. The Roughriders will take 10 athletes in 9 different events.

In the Peninsula basketball League, Black Diamond beat Bayview Flooring 78-59. Jim Textor had 24 points for the winners. Olympic Health beat Big Barn Ballers 66-37. Kenny Meier had 20 points for Olympic Health.
