PORT ANGELES Authorities say they’ve recovered evidence thrown from a fleeing stolen vehicle after a drive by shooting in Port Angeles.
Yesterday, Clallam and Jefferson County Search and Rescue teams conducted a search adjacent to the roadway on SR 104 where officers previously observed the fleeing vehicle throw items from the moving car. Clallam County sheriff Sergeant John Hollis says the teams located an AR style .223 short-barreled rifle that had been dissembled and thrown over the hillside. Investigators believe it is likely the firearm used in the drive by shooting. Additionally, a backpack containing ammunition appropriate for this rifle was located near the same area during a search conducted after the pursuit.
The pursuit began Sunday night after a reported drive by shooting east of Port Angeles. The suspects then led police on a high-speed chase, sometimes heading the wrong direction on Highway 101, until they were stopped with a PIT maneuver on Highway 104.
Two men were arrested and booked on multiple charges. One of the suspects was wanted on an arrest warrant for escaping conferment on a previous felony conviction.
