LOCAL SPORTS: Sequim girls reload for expected strong hoops season

SEQUIM — Will the 2022-2023 High School Basketball season be the year of the Wolves in the Olympic league. The Sequim Wolves girls basketball team and their fans think so. The Wolves, coming off a season where the Wolves went 20-5 overall; 13-1 in league play and a co-league championship with Port Angeles, return all their fire power except for Hannah Wagner who was their one consistent outside shooter.  The Wolves made it to the “Sweet 16” regional but were beat easily by Lynden. How much improvement individually and as a team will set the tone for the Wolves. Is this a regional tournament team or a team that is a favorite to make the March trip to Yakima?

Overall, the Wolves have a perfect mix of speed and size. In the backcourt 2nd-year head coach Joclin Julmist will rearm with the “Dungeness Rocket” junior guard Taryn Johnson from the soccer field to go with senior point guard Hannah Bates. The Wolves also add reserve junior guard Kaitlyn Bloomenrader, the track star brining more speed than Talladega Speedway.  5’10” junior forward Jolene Vaara will play both inside and outside. Vaara scored 31 points against Port Angeles in the Wolves 60 – 55 win over the Roughriders. It was the Wolves’ first win over Port Angeles since 2015. The post position will be held down by 6’0″ senior Jelissa Julmist. Julmist went down with an injury at the end of the regular season and the Wolves desperately missed her. Port Angeles blew out Sequim twice without Julmist 60-36 and 63-26.

The other starting position is still up for grabs with the contenders being 5’5″ sophomore guard Bobbie Mixson, 5’4″ sophomore Mikki Green, 5’9″ Sr. Sammie Bacon, and 5’9″ sophomore Libby Turella. Also seeing varsity time will be 6’0″ junior Dani Herman.

The Wolves open the season December 5th at Neah Bay. The Red Devils return nearly their entire team that lost in the B1 State Championship game. The Sequim-Neah Bay game will be broadcast live on KONP News Radio. The Wolves will play at Port Angeles on January 10th and will host the Roughriders on February 2nd. Those 2 games will obviously have the Wolf fans howling and both games should decide the Olympic league championship.

The Port Angeles Roughriders girls bowling season is underway. The Roughriders split their first two contests with Olympic. Monday the Roughriders beat Olympic by four pins. Senior Captain Taylor Worthington led the way with a 2-game high of 250. Zoey Van Gordon had a single high game of 133. Also with 2-game scores were Violet Mills 181, Kenadie Ring 154 and Abby Rudd 203.

Yesterday, Olympic came out on top with the Roughriders being led by Abby Robinson with a single high game of 143 and a 2-game score of 264. Violet Mills Bowled a 218 and Kenadie Ring improved her 2-game score by 61 pins. Port Angeles will host Klahowya at 3 pm on Monday.

In a Peninsula League basketball game Bayview Flooring beat Adam Tree Service 73-32. Blake Sohlberg with 22 points and John Textor with 15 points led Bayview while Ace Sech with 9 and Jacob Pleines with 8 points led the Quilcene team.
