LOCAL SPORTS: Roughriders come up short against Sammamish

RENTON — The Port Angeles Roughriders boys basketball team averages 71 points per game. But yesterday against Sammamish, the Roughriders could only put 43 points on the scoreboard losing to the Red Hawks 51-43. The Roughriders led 21-19 at the half but were outscored 18-8 in the 3rd quarter and with ice cold shooting they never recovered.  Parker Nickerson hit for 13 points and Bryant Hoke hit four 3-point shots for 12 points. The Roughriders 7-1 in league play and 9-5 overall will host North Mason tonight at 7 pm.

The Sequim boys will host Bremerton tonight and the 2nd ranked Sequim girls will be heavy favorite at Bremerton tip off at 7 pm.  In a game you will hear on Newsradio KONP, the Roughriders girls travel to North Mason with the tip off at 7 pm. The Les Schwab Tires Pre-game show starts at 6:45 pm.

In a big announcement, the showdown between the #1 ranked Neah Bay Red Devils and the 2nd-ranked Sequim Wolves will take place Tuesday February 7th at Sequim with a 6 pm tip off in a game being called the “Rally in the Valley”. In the first game of the year at Neah Bay, the Wolves came from behind to beat Neah Bay 60-52.

In NWAC basketball action, the 3rd-ranked Peninsula Pirates men won their 8th game in a row coming from behind by 12 points at the half to beat Shoreline in OT 78-72. Roosevelt Williams Jr. led the way with 20 points. Esa Onakpoma hit for 16. Former North Kitsap Viking Aiden Olmstead hit for 12 points and Mikey Medlock hit for 10 points.

The Pirate women came out on the short end, losing thier 2nd game in a row, this time to Shoreline 65-55. Millie Long led the Pirates with 15 points. The Pirates host Skagit Valley tomorrow night.

In high school bowling action, the Roughriders beat Olympic 6-1. Natalie Robinson had a game high of 156 and a 2-game high of 289. Abby Robinson bowled a two-game high of 272 and Paige Pangro threw a 257. Taylor Worthington threw a turkey. The Roughriders will have their league tournament Thursday.

In swimming, it was a big time performance by the Roughriders as they placed 2nd out of 10 teams losing only to 3A power Gig Harbor.  Placing in the top were Davis Hueter 5th in the 500 free style; Finn Thompson finished 5th in the 100 backstroke; Thompson also placed 5th in the 200-med relay along with Aiden Butterworth, Will Roening and Keane McClain. Finishing 2nd in the 200 free style were Keane McClain, Finn Thompson, Landon Close and Alex Che.  Finishing 3rd in the 400 free style relay were Colby Ellefson, Keane McClain, Landon Close and Alex Cole. Colby Ellefson finished 5th in the 200 free style. Alex Che finished 3rd in the 500 free style.
